What’s The Big Idea?

Is it vision?  Is it imagination?  Is it inspiration?

Maybe it’s the pressure of expectation.  Maybe it’s all about the process, and not so much about the fulfillment.

Maybe it’s for someone else.

Whatever it is, I don’t know how to define it any longer.

Pastors are supposed to be men of vision.  We are expected to have fresh and innovative ideas.  We are expected to initiate these ideas in order to maximize our: outreach, effectiveness and congregational growth.  The hip young pastors who are leading some of the fastest and most innovative ministries in America are said to be men of vision.  They’re leaving their mark, and the funny thing is… their marks all look the same.

They’re getting book deals from Zondervan.  (just because they write one good book, doesn’t mean they can write two more…)

They are peddling outrageously priced training materials on their web-sites. (for granted, some guys are putting free stuff out there, like Andy S. -  thanks Andy)

They are hosting, speaking at and attending the conferences that appear to be designed around the outrageously priced stuff they are peddling on the web, thus maximizing their output.

They are blogging.  What about?  The stuff they do, which, by the way, is also all the stuff I can’t do because: I am not a speed reader,  I have a very limited budget and I have a very large, very demanding family.

They are coaching.  They have coaching networks. They are being coached to coach.  They are peddling outrageously priced coaching to those who want to be coached.  (since when did “coaching” become such a popular term in the church?)

They are developing ideas that carry the new mandatory labels of:  ‘innovative’ and ‘relative’.

I don’t really mean to criticize my fellow church planting pastors.  (except for the part about the “outrageous prices”).  They are doing an incredible job, lives are being changed and many people are hearing the gospel.  Good stuff is happening and God is using them in a HUGE way.

Their hearts are good, their work is good and they surely love Jesus.  So why is it, THAT I FEEL SO PRESSURED to do what they are doing… to have the vision, to come up with the innovative ideas, to mimic their programs and read their material???

I’ve come up with some pretty good ideas.  The most significant one is Overflow.  I’ve worked on this idea for years and have publicly announced that THIS IS WHAT CCCVILLE IS GOING TO DO, YOU CAN BET YOUR BOTTOM DOLLAR FOR SURE!!!    -But we’re not doing Overflow.  I don’t feel like I have permission.  I feel like it would be a complete and total work of my flesh if I tried to make it happen right now.  I don’t think our congregation is ready.

I had two ideas for ministry on the down town mall this summer.  I wanted to do a simple vs. by vs. Bible study through Mark every other Friday.  There are soap-box preachers down there giving the church a black eye.  Someone should be preaching the Word from the Word with humility and not just condemning people to Hell from a spirit of self righteousness.   I also wanted to send out people in groups of two every Friday night for the purpose of evangelism.  But not like it’s normally done.  They aren’t going to shove tracts in everybody’s face hoping that they might get a break-through with one person.  Instead, they are going to go out, asking God to lead them to one person in need.  There’s a bit more to it, but this is the quick run-down.  Well, I’ve been looking over my calendar, and I have/had 4 free Fridays from June – August.  GREAT IDEAS FOR MINISTRY.  I’VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT THEM.  I CAN’T DO THEM.

Which brings me back to the beginning.

Is it vision?  Is it imagination?  Is it inspiration?

Maybe it’s the pressure of expectation.  Maybe it’s all about the process, and not so much about the fulfillment.

Maybe it’s for someone else.

Whatever it it, I don’t know how to define it any longer.

I don’t intend on receiving the self induced pressure anymore.  I’m glad that others are having a great experience with their: books, training materials, coaching, time management, productivity and their innovation.

I’m not like that.  I can come up with great ideas for ministry… but, they’re probably just that: (my great ideas).  For now, I’m discouraged by those great ideas.  Why did I go through all of that?  (especially with Overflow)  Is it something for someone else?  Is it for the future?  Was it just about the process?

I don’t know.

From here on out, I’m investing more into the preaching.  I’m investing more into word studies.  I’m investing more into research.  I’m investing more into the preparation and the presentation.  I’m not going to feel pressured to: come up with innovative ideas, or read more John Maxwell books, or attending hip “one word titled” conferences.  Innovation and vision…  they can happen naturally on their own, when I’m not feeling pressured to make them happen.

Anyone want a good ministry plan?  Overflow is available.  It’s yours for free.

    Chad,
You are welcome to delete this message if you choose. This is your blog of course and you are completly in charge, so feel free to do so. This is a message for God’s church at large. I included.
My thoughts : As we serve one another it is important to constantly re-examine our own theories and practices, and ask God to show us where we have fallen short. We all fall short. I included.
Our development with Christ will be life-long . It is vital we repent for all of of our sins, confess them and ask God for forgiveness, and all others who I may have offended. As ministers, our role is to pray for the person we are serving, and their family. Pray for God to fill the us and the congregation with the Holy Spirit so that we may be brought in a closer conformity to God’s will. No one can substitute for the redemption and regeneration that only God can supply.
Sometimes God does not allow us to move forward until we take a step back and reflect. Since multitudes of people never go inside our churches, Christians must go out to where the people are, reaching them with the wonderful message of salvation.
The early Church went everywhere preaching the Word. Philip traveled from town to town in Judea and Samaria preaching the Gospel. Paul stood proclaiming Jesus and the resurrection. Christ taught that He is the only Savior of lost mankind. He said, “No one comes to the Father, but by Me” (John 14:6). Compelled by His love, the first Christians evangelized the known world. Today, as multitudes are dying without Christ and without hope, the Lord of the harvest calls us to be involved in evangelizing the whole world. “How shall they hear without a preacher?” (Rom 10:14b)
I think CCC needs to call anyone and everyone that has left the church, or has been absent from the church and see how they can be brought back into the fold. The current church needs a time of prayer and fasting and beg for God’s revelation.
Go after the lost sheep and bring them back into the fold. Then maybe God will allow CCC to make another step into reaching out to others in the world that are lost and do not know the freedom of having Jesus Christ as his or her savior.
    In His Name,
    JoAnn Robertson

  2. Chad,

I usually don’t encourage you publicly but it must be done. Did you stop and think that Overflow will be “under” your ministry AND not your minsitry?? A branch of it. I must apologize. God let me feel your heart last Sunday and I didn’t email you. I know “how” discouraged you are and I am so sorry for your discouragement.

Chad, a vision is not exact when it comes to our Father. Sometimes it is, but when he places his spirit in us AND gives us a glimse from his eyes…who really cares how it plays out. We must wait, pray and stay in HIS will. Wait for the spirit to lead us. I give you an A++ for waiting on the spirit knowing its not time to step out. But Chad, I hate to disappoint you but I don’t give up that easily. It would be too easy for me to believe you are just “preaching” when God has given me so much for you.

Why has God given me your vision for what now 8 years?? Do you remember the first vision he gave me?? How many times has it been different yet the same “serving our community”. Using your talents AND being stretched outside your comfort zone.

Chad, I am sorry that your heart is always on the line and we sometimes we witness it getting stomped on publicly. We serve the Lord and in that submission we are called to support you. I am sorry if we haven’t been supportive enough AND encouraging enough.

I understand your thinking its not time because God gave me a vision for myself 6 years ago and its not happening yet. Its really hard…I know. Sometimes agonizing. But those who wait upon the Lord renew their strength and fly like eagles.

You haven’t missed it, God is getting his church ready. I had a clear vision 2 Wednesdays ago but God didn’t want me to share. He gave it to me again this Wednesday and made it clear. Chad if God would have told you what he’s telling me last year with Overflow, it would have been too big. If he would have given me this to tell you last year, I couldn’t have handled it.

Chad, God is getting ready to allow the church to be hit just like housing, financial, etc. instead of you going here and there, God is going to give you a facility. Are you hearing me a facility. You can do your music at this place. You will have your own community center.

Maybe it won’t be Overflow But I have the letter you sent us just before Overflow. You weren’t going to set goals. You were going to commit to support mission work, Expand our outreach through Overflow community center, hire a youth pastor and media ministry.

Chad you haven’t missed God. How do i know? Because he keeps giving me visions for you. Visions are like billboards on the super highway. We have to drive to see them. If you want to get off the highway…fine but I’m still driving the bus forward. I will let you know the destination my brother.

I feel God is pruning your flock. With the vision he has given you there is no room for “mediocre” in your flock. I believe God is working in the midst of your flock plucking and pruning. You are right the congregation isn’t ready.

One thing I will forever remind you, you are led by the spirit. This is a gift you and Julie have and I thank God for your virtuous examples. Churches have to be careful not to be like organizations. Pastors don’t meet the needs, God does. Sometimes we can put undeserving pressure on you. Not looking to God for the needs we need filled through church. We can as your sheep should be praying for the needs to get filled and expect them to get filled and not looking to you to motivate us and encourage us but GOD. Maybe God is turning the eyes of your flock off you and to him. This could be a reason for the delay.

Chad, God gave me another vision for you that answered why its not coming yet….someone else is laboring over the facility and God will give it to your HIS faithful servant.

I believe your vision is coming. I believe God is going to exceed your heart’s desire. AND Chad, you never said this to me, but God has. You will be involved with your music doing it. I saw you on stage evangalizing through your music. All the things that have happened over the last year are training for what’s to come.

Josh 5:6 – God has made solemn promises to His children and desires that we live in the place where we get to enjoy their fulfillment.

Gal 6:9 – Let us not become weary in doing good for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up!!

I believe we have not because we ask not. We have to believe God for EVERY need….EVERY thing. Chad you haven’t missed it. He’s training you, because it’s big. Psalm 81:10 …open your mouth wide and I will fill it. Just like God gave David territories, supplies, and resources he is getting ready to do this for his church.

If I have to hold your arm up for months, I will. I am here to support you and I WILL NOT LET THIS GO UNTIL GOD STOPS GIVING ME VISIONS!!!!!
    Love in Christ,

    FOREVER thinking BIGGER!!!!

    Deneen

PS – the last month when I walk in church on Sunday, I have the attitude WOW God you have a lot of opportunities to work here. [Remember when I encouraged you with the empty seats? When you see an empty seat its an opportunity for God to work?]

PSS – I will be sending you a VERY long winded email when God lets me. I am going to ask for more clarity and we both know he will give it to me :) .
