Hurricane Relief Part 2

If Gustav hits the coast (here’s our parameters) East of the Mississippi and is level 3 or more.. we’re heading down Tuesday night or Wednesday.  Of all the Katrina relief trips we took, our first response trip was the easiest.  We planned and organized it in a day, and took off the next.  We drove through Katrina as it rolled up through Tennessee and arrived in Southern Mississippi the same day as the National Guard.  They were there in the morning.. we were there in the afternoon… so it was close.

Here’s the plan.

Focus on a hard hit area that is outside of the media blitz zone.  New Orleans got all the attention with Katrina.  For that reason, a lot relief groups focused their work in those areas.  Pascagoula, MS. was crushed too.  That’s where we focused all of our trips.  (of course, we also hit Ocean Springs and Biloxi)  -If we go, this is what we’ll do again.

Find a water supply as close to the damage as possible.  Last time, we bought our water in Montgomery, AB.  Later, we found out that we could have gotten it at a Sam’s Club in Mobile.

Reserve a big truck as close to the water supply as possible.

Drive there, rent the truck, load the truck and find people who need the water.

Pretty simple right?  It is, actually.  We had no problem finding people who wanted the water.  The truck was unloaded from two different locations in a matter of 3 hours total.

For us, it’s a 14 hour drive.

If you’re close enough, and can spare an investment of about $2000.00, why don’t you do it too?

Pray that Gustav doesn’t do damage.  If it does, pray for us… if indeed we mobilize.
